Art 2 - Abstract Color Block Painting

Art 2 students completed design based on a work of architecture or machine.  Color theory, rhythm, and composition were all important to this unit.

Art 1 - "Wrapped Up Celebrity"

Students in Art 1 recently studied art that makes a social statement.  They looked at several works of art by artist Kathe Kolwitz, who during World War II, created works of art showing the atrocities of war.  Students were to note how the work was never violent, but but powerful in its message.

Social statement artwork by Hoover students was to tell us their opinion on celebrities who they feel their time is 'wrapped up" in the public eye.  After learning how to create an shade ribbon, students created complex wrapping around the figure of their choice.

And So "IT" Begins...

With the school year just beginning, it becomes important to remind visual art students at Hoover of their responsibility:

1. Please bring your supplies to class (sketchbook, wooden pencil, eraser, and art fee $35 in Art 1 & 2 and $45 for Art 3)

2. Be ready to hit the ground running.  We are going to start the first day drawing and getting into art making!

3. Bring your positive artistic enthusiasm!

Art 2 - "Paper Trail" Self Portraits

The next few entries will highlight Art 2 students who worked this year on improving their creative writing and response skills by integrating it with their visual artwork.  The April/May submission include bike drawings that started students on "mapping" their thoughts on a subject.  Students were asked to make a mind map on their first bike.

The entry below is our first in a series of "Paper Trail" portraits.  Students were asked to create a self-portrait that had random pieces of paper from their daily travels...or their "paper trail".  Students collected ticket stubs, hall passes from school, receipts from fast-food restaurants, etc.  These were collaged within the work of art.

Finally, students were instructed to create a poem that told us about their lives in the past, present, and future.  They were to be a companion to the self-portraits they had done earlier.

Arts in Stark Grant

A BIG thanks goes to the Arts in Stark Foundation for their generous grant that funded a few special projects within the art room.  Art 2 students were given the opportunity to hear from artist Clare Murray Adams.  Clare is a professor of art at Malone University and a nationally known mixed media artist. One of Clare's many passions is the art of journaling. She has journaled (written and visual artwork) about her journeys over the past twenty years. Students were able to see her work first hand and listen to how she blends the visual image with the written word in her journals.  The following entries will be dedicated to this special project.

Arts in Stark funded our speaker and cameras for students to take pictures of themselves for self-portraits.  Thanks again for the support AiS.  We could have not done it without you!

Class of 2011–Period 12

The Class of 2011

Today was the last day of Art 3 with the entire class.  We wish our seniors well, as they begin their adult journey.  Everyone have a safe and happy summer. We’ll see our “new seniors” back here in August.  Congratulations to the class of 2011.  (Picture:  Art 3 period 2)
